Using SVG Files in Cricut Design Space

Cricut Design Space has its own SVG handling quirks that differ from LightBurn or Inkscape. Understanding how Design Space interprets SVG files saves time and prevents common import errors.

How Design Space reads SVG files

Design Space parses SVG groups, layers, and path attributes and maps them to "layers" in its UI. Each distinct color in your SVG becomes a separate layer. Since all Pathhaus paths are black, they'll be imported as a single layer. Design Space may attempt to "close" open paths for cutting operations — this doesn't affect Draw operations, but is why you must always set your layer to Draw/Pen mode, not Cut mode, for single-line fonts.

Uploading your Pathhaus SVG

In Design Space, click Upload → Upload Image → select your Pathhaus SVG. Choose "Complex" as the image type. Design Space will show a preview. Click "Remove Background" if it detects a background rectangle. Continue to the upload confirmation screen. Click "Upload" to add it to your library. Then click "Insert Images" to add it to your canvas.

Setting Draw mode

Select your paths on the canvas. In the Operation dropdown (top left of canvas), change from "Basic Cut" to "Draw". A pen icon will appear. Select your pen type from the dropdown that appears. Design Space will now show your text as a drawing operation in the layer panel, and the machine will use the pen in Clamp A rather than the blade.

Sizing and positioning

Design Space displays SVG files at a default size that may not match your intended output. After import, check the W and H values in the toolbar. Resize by entering the correct dimensions (lock the aspect ratio icon first). For text designed at 50mm height in Pathhaus, enter 50mm in the H field. If Design Space interprets the units differently, you may need to try both mm and inch values until dimensions match.
